Mobile app showing attendance data collection

BLOG – Making student attendance data collection easy

Collecting accurate attendance data is important for Higher Education Institutions who want to help their students succeed.

As well as legal obligations, or requirements to ensure that a certain number of hours teaching has been completed, being able to see information around student attendance helps to build a picture of the student as an individual learner.

However managing this can be time consuming if the institution relies on using a paper based register. The lecturer has to read out the names and mark attendees as present, or otherwise rely on a sign in sheet, which can provide unreliable data.

With this in mind universities are increasingly using swipe card systems where a student passes a card through a reader as they enter a room, thereby recording their attendance.

This solution is expensive and can also be time consuming, especially in rooms that may only have 1 or 2 entry points with hundreds of students trying to swipe on entry.

We’ve taken a different approach with our attendance monitoring system. We’ve developed a cost effective, simple to use and time efficient solution which utilizes both mobile and iBeacon technology to provide a seamless experience for the student and lecturer alike, whilst providing accurate attendance data to the institution.

The student simply registers using an app on their mobile device which is triggered by the iBeacon as they enter the room. You can read more about iBeacons and how they work here.

The beauty of this solution is that it saves institutions time and money, whilst allowing students to register using the technology that they use every day, and by integrating with their timetable the data collected is reliable and accurate.

We have run a number of pilots over the last few months which have received really positive feedback so now we are looking forward to rolling out the solution further.
