Royal Veterinary College selects campusM to ramp up technological innovation
Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has selected campusM Student and App Extension Kit (AEK). With two sites and large numbers of students out on practice in the field, campusM, available on all mobile devices, will be an important communication channel.
RVC defines itself as a technologically-advanced veterinary college, and is well known for advanced research and learning tools, such as its award-winning simulation of canine ocular reflexes and the use of mobile devices for real-time disease surveillance in Africa. RVC is particularly impressed by the Moodle learning component of campusM, along with timetabling, PC Availability and Library, and plans to incorporate a mobile public transport module developed by Imperial College London. With the AEK, the College will be developing its own unique services, and we look forward to seeing what this innovative institution comes up with.
oMbiel is now on LinkedIn
We’ve spent some time this week building our company profile on LinkedIn. We’ve kept it brief, but there’s now some key information on both oMbiel and its products that you might want to take a look at. If you’re active on LinkedIn, why not follow us? It’s a useful way of keeping in touch and finding out what we’re up to. Many of the staff-members are already on LinkedIn, of course, and it’s great that the company now has a presence on this important networking site.
What do our customers say about campusM Enterprise?
campusM Enterprise is now embedded in a number of institutions, and we get genuinely excited by the things that our customers are planning and doing with the platform. Concrete outcomes are really coming through now, so we took the opportunity to get a number of customers together to discuss their experiences. Five of them kindly agreed to have a filmed conversation with me at the last campusM User Group, and the result is this short video, Choosing campusM Enterprise.
Take a look and see why they chose campusM Enterprise, what they have planned and achieved, and the mobile services they are already delivering to stakeholder groups such as prospective students and alumni.
oMbiel is recruiting for a Marketing Manager
In its ongoing expansion into new markets, oMbiel has identified a need for a Marketing Manager. Based at our Wolverhampton office, the Marketing Manager will manage all aspects of the company’s marketing activities, including lead generation e-marketing, company websites, social media, marketing collateral across a range of media, events (internal and external), partners and sponsors, PR, advertising, and market / competitor research.
This is a demanding but rewarding role for an energetic marketing professional who can also make a broader commercial contribution to decision-making in such areas as pricing, product development and routes to market.

MMU wins Guardian Student Experience award
A couple of us went over to Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) recently to deliver their annual health check (part of the standard campusM package). The University had recently won the Guardian Student Experience award, and in conversation, staff-members saw campusM as part of that success.
MMU has been making use of a range of technologies, including campusM, in its root and branch overhaul of curriculum design and delivery – the focus of the award. One objective was to provide personalized information across a range of channels, including mobile, as The Guardian itself reported:
“Students were also keen to integrate mobile technologies into every aspect of their university lives: this included personalised information on timetables, deadlines, reading lists and learning resources.”
At the end of the day, though, what MMU has achieved is the successful completion of a far-reaching programme of change.
Congratulations to everyone at MMU, from the campusM team.
iLancaster mobile app shortlisted for Times Higher Education award
Lancaster University has been shortlisted for this year’s prestigious Times Higher Education awards, in the category ICT Initiative of the Year. The team at Lancaster has played a pioneering role in using the campusM mobile platform to extend its iLancaster app, meeting local needs and student expectations. By sharing good practice, which they are always happy to do (Lancaster’s Brian Green is Chair of the campusM User Group, for example), they drive up standards of mobile provision right across the sector. Among the raft of features on iLancaster that make university life easier, is a service that Brian and his team have developed to locate available washing machines in the various launderettes on campus.
So fingers crossed for Thursday June 20th, when the winners will be announced.
US-based Empire Education Group chooses campusM
Empire Education Group has selected campusM to provide its students with personalized information from its student records system on any device. Empire, which runs more than 100 beauty schools in the US, first heard about campusM through an Educause event. We’re now planning implementation project – due to start next month – which will provide mobile apps to Empire students across 21 states.
LinkedIn goes native
In what’s been described as “a stunning reversal”, LinkedIn has become the latest social networking provider – following a similar move by Facebook last year – to break from HTML5 and return to native mobile apps. In this interview, Kiran Prasad, Senior Director for Mobile Engineering, reveals that LinkedIn has suffered from memory problems as users spend more and more time in the app, and HTML5 has also limited the development of an attractive look and feel (animation, for example, is smoother and more sophisticated with a native approach). One striking quotation from Prasad: “we recognize now that HTML5 is not allowing us to do the best for our users” sums up LinkedIn’s current position and really chimes with our own thinking here at campusM.
campusM is now recruiting for a Moodle and E-Learning Systems Developer
Having developed a core set of features to integrate our campusM mobile platform with Moodle and other VLEs, we’re looking for someone who can help us to deliver its full potential.
Are you the Moodle and E-Learning System Developer we’re looking for?
You’ll need seasoned business skills to identify future developments for the mobile learning component of the campusM platform roadmap. Technically you’ll need to be able to develop Web Services, run our VLE test environments, and generally pitch in with our hard-working and dynamic mobile technology team here in Wolverhampton, where the position is based.
This is a full-time position reporting directly to the CEO of oMbiel. Interested? Check out ombiel.com (on the Careers page, under the About Us tab) for further details, then send your CV to enquiries@ombiel.com.
Counting down the days to Thursday’s campusM User Group meeting
Thursday’s campusM User Group meeting will be Andrew Taylor’s first as Client Satisfaction Manager. He was telling me this morning that almost 50 representatives from UK and European Universities have signed up to attend the all-day event which University College London (UCL) has kindly agreed to host.
In response to feedback, we’ve filled the agenda with customers telling their own stories of campusM developments. We always look forward to CEO Hugh Griffiths’ update on the campusM roadmap, and I know that he’s planning to demonstrate a very exciting new development at the meeting. Finally, in case you’re not aware, we’ve lifted the technical developer sessions out to a separate event which we’ll be running some time in July.
See you at UCL on Thursday?
